Amsterdam, 10 May 2017

On Wednesday, 10 May 2017, alderman Gerrie Elfrink officially opened Schuytgraaf shopping centre in Arnhem, the Netherlands. On this occasion, he was joined by representatives of the shopping centre developer and owner Multi Netherlands and the housing associations Vivare, Portaal and Volkshuisvesting Arnhem. The event means that the shopping centre, located in the Arnhem-Zuid district of the same name, has now become the central place to meet in the area. Schuytgraaf shopping centre has 6,000 m2 of stores, food & beverage outlets and services, 64 social rented homes above the stores and car parking facilities. The shopping centre has already been fully let.

Alderperson Elfrink: “The opening of the shopping centre is a great occasion for local residents. It is a long-awaited moment they have really been looking forward to. The realisation of the shopping centre means that the provision of facilities within the district has almost reached its ideal level.”

Lively mix of stores
The shopping centre offers a balanced mixture of popular chain stores and local businesses, including: Albert Heijn, Gall & Gall, Etos, HEMA, Zeeman, Domino’s, Kwalitaria, Ami Kappers, Zuivelhoeve, Slagerij Pluim & De Haas, Bakkerij Hilvers, Wyborgh Optiek, Primera, Bite Sushi, Strijbosch Thunnissen Makelaars and Jan Fleur Bloemen. The last two retail units were recently let to lunchroom Fyn and Piazza ice-cream parlour.

Francoise Dechesne, Managing Director at Multi Netherlands: “The time has come at last. The residents of Schuytgraaf can now do their daily shopping in their own neighbourhood and the new centre will also attract visitors. The variety of stores combined with the mix of food & beverage outlets will prove a very worthy addition. It will be a place to feel at home and meet each other!”

Homes above the stores
The housing associations Portaal, Vivare and Volkshuisvesting Arnhem are responsible for the 64 affordable homes above the shopping centre. Portaal and Vivare have added 44 three-room apartments and Volkshuisvesting Arnhem has completed 20 family homes. The homes above the stores have already been handed over to the occupants. This combination of residential and retail will boost the atmosphere and vitality of the district.

Eric Angenent, Vivare CEO: “Schuytgraaf will be brought to life by the new shopping centre and the homes above the stores will ensure that the place is really buzzing. The housing associations in Arnhem have demonstrated their commitment to affordable living in pleasant neighbourhoods.”

The parties involved
In partnership with KWP and BPD, Multi Netherlands was responsible for developing the stores and Veluwezoom Verkerk Bouw built the residential properties. Multi also owns the stores and has added this project to its Dutch retail portfolio. The residential properties are owned by housing associations Portaal, Vivare and Volkshuisvesting Arnhem. The Municipality of Arnhem was responsible for landscaping public areas.TTDesign, Multi’s in-house design agency, took responsibility for the planning concept and Arnhem-based Geesink Weusten Architects designed the shopping centre.
